Exhibition StatementBeyond the thin blue line where sea and sky meet, there is a place of no return - a place where stories, song and dance are passed down from generation to generation. I created this exhibition to follow a journey beginning on the Isle of Barra in Scotland in 1817, where a Scottish family is about to leave their homeland to begin a life in the New World. Continuing on the journey to MacKinnon's Brook and the Mabou Highlands, we experience the spirit of this magical place throughout the four seasons. The physical challenge of photographing this exhibit helped me to reflect and appreciate how difficult life must have been for the families who first settled here, crossing an ocean and breaking ground with hopes of starting a new life in an unknown land. Through the use of colour, light, texture and form we explore the natural beauty of the land on which these early Scottish settlers lived, worked, and have now left to return to nature. In my own reflection, I see the Mabou Highlands as a place of wisdom, spirit and magic.
